Sufficiently abundant cervical mucus of good quality clears the pathway for the sperm.
For a pregnancy to occur one sperm has to fertilize one egg.  To fertilize the egg, after ejaculation, the sperm must make its way up the cervical mucus present in the cervix during ovulation, then up through the fallopian tubes before reaching the egg which it to fertilizes.
Cervical mucus changes during ovulation.
Cervical mucus is normally a hostile environment for sperm because of its low pH of 3-4 while sperm can survive in solutions at pH 7.2-7.8, such as semen. With a pH of 3, sperm can not survive in the vagina longer than 1 to 2 hours, whereas the length of the route of the sperm is from 1 to 12 hours. But, just before ovulation, a woman's body prepares to host the sperm. The cervical mucus changes to promote the migration of sperm to fertilize the oocyte:
The pH of the mucus increases.
The mucus becomes more abundant
The structure of the mucus changes to consist of strands that are aligned according to scale which facilitates the movement of the sperm.
The mucus also plays a filtering role that removes the lowest quality or malformed sperm.
The woman can observe her cervical mucus becomes more abundant, lighter, more elastic and more fluid during ovulation.
